HG400 Random Number Generators

HG400 datasheet

Main features

  • true, non-deterministic randomness
  • connected to a PC and powered via the USB2.0 port
  • random bits also accessible (in serial manner) via the OEM port (no PC required)
  • produced random numbers pass Diehard and NIST STS randomness tests
  • cryprographically secure
  • very fast - HG4xx devices are the fastest RNG's on the market
  • comes with drivers and software for Microsoft Windows and Linux
  • easy to use, miniature (size of the cigarette box), lightweight
  • based upon the proprietary, patented technology
  • affordable price
USB port OEM port

Main areas of use

  • cryptography and computer security
  • PIN numbers for prepaid services (eg. mobile telephony)
  • TAN numbers for e-banking
  • lottery and gambling
  • numerical simulations in industry and scientific research
  • industrial labeling and testing
  • production of analog and digital noise for laboratory tests

General

HG400 is a new generation of ultra fast non-deterministic random number generators. They consists of multiple independent random pulse generators based on a Zener diode noise which are combined to provide random bits at unpreceded rate. Currently three models are available: HG416 (16Mbps), HG424 (24Mbps) and HG432 (32Mbps).

Technical specifications

* Bias is defined as the difference between the measured probability of ones and the ideal probability of one-half: b = |p(1) - 0.5|.

Randomness tests results

Apart from many simple tests such as , the HG400 series generators also pass two important tests: the STS test and the DIEHARD test.

The US National Institute of Standards and Technology has proposed the "Statistical Test Suite for Random and Pseudorandom Number Generators for Cryptographic Applications", STS. We have tested 500 sequences of 1.000.000 bits produced by the HG432 generator with all 16 tests available in the suite. The tests were pased with excellent marks. Detailed results of a typical test of a 63 Mbyte of random numbers created by the HG432 can be found here.

We have also performed tests with the "DIEHARD" battery of strong statistical randomness tests, probably the most respectable test suite, invented by prof. Georges Marsaglia from the Florida State University. We have used the latest version which comprizes 17 different statistical tests. Some of them require very long sequences: the minimum to run all the tests is 268 megabytes. Tipical test result of a 300 megabytes of random data produced by the HG432 device can be found here. Most of the tests produce one p-value, whereas some produce several p-values. A test is said to fail if a single p-value related to it is either very close to 0 or to 1 (up to 6 or more decimal places). The data passed the DIEHARD test very well.

Sample Binary Files

The USB interface sends one byte at the time to the PC. The downloading software simply writes them to a standard output or a file.

Some sample binary files produced by a HG432 unit can be found below.

hg400-10k.bin (10.000 bytes)
hg400-100k.bin (100.000 bytes)
hg400-1M_0.bin (1.000.000 bytes)

More 1 Mbyte sample files can be found here.
