Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the HG 324 Hardware Random Bit Generator.
It is based on a new generation of optimized electronic circuitry which relies on a patented process.

The HG 324 unit contains four independent random bit generators and makes use of special technology to obtain unmatched bit transfer rates for an external unit (up to 1.200,000 bits/sec) while providing at the same time the best quality random data.

Random numbers play an increasingly important role in todays life. A high-quality sequences of random numbers are needed in many areas from engineering to cryptography.

Typical (common) examples of use of the random numbers are: in high energy physics for various "Monte Carlo" simulations of naturally random phenomena such as particle interactions and transport, in lattice theory calculations, in statistical mathematics for evaluation of results of calculations for which the theoretical evaluation seems to be beyond reach, in various simulations in engineering of nuclear power plants, such as evaluations of safety protocols, in cryptography for generation of passwords and public keys and in secure data transfer protocols, etc.

Since most of these tasks are performed with a help of computers, it is desirable to have a means to produce random numbers in such a way that they can be easily accessed by a computer. The most common approach is to calculate random numbers by means of a special algorithm or formula, which leads us to what is commonly referred to as pseudo-random numbers .

Pseudo-random numbers appear to be random but are actually predictable because they are produced by a (usually simple) mathematical formula. In order to start producing pseudo-random numbers one must specify an initial number, so called seed . This seed is used to calculate the first random number. Every random number that is calculated, serves as a seed to produce the next random number. Thus, if an initial random number is specified, the whole sequence of "random numbers" is in principle determined.

On the other hand, if you need truly random numbers you should use a hardware random bit generator such as HG 324. This generator cannot be seeded and its output is always unpredictable. It is not possible to control or predict its outcome.
